Training Opportunities

Parliamentary Learning and Development 
for Members and their Staff


The House of Commons has awarded to WWP Training a three year contract (from October 2003) for the delivery of training services for Members' staff.  All programmes are free and staff who travel to attend these courses can reclaim travel costs via the Department of Finance and Administration and will not need to use their Member's travel warrants.  


The following programmes are available to Members' staff over the next few months.  Click on the course titles immediately below for dates and outline details.  Then click on the titles in the boxes for full information including Course Prerequisites, Course Focus and Performance-based Objectives  (PDF files - typically 20 to 30 KB each).

The Induction Day is ideal for new starters.  The aim of the programme is to familiarise you with important information about working for an MP as well as addressing any concerns that you might have.
Word 2002 Introduction

  • Create, save and print a document  
  • Perform basic editing operations, such as inserting, deleting and copying text  
  • Perform basic formatting operations, such as applying attributes and a new font/size to text, resetting margins, tab stops and line spacing and text alignment in a document

Managing an office for an MP carries particular challenges. This course will help you to clarify expectations, to communicate these effectively and then to get the best out of your team.  The second day will focus on how to deal with problems such as unsatisfactory performance or attendance.

Managing the Allowances

If you are responsible for managing your Member’s incidental expenses, provision or staffing allowance, this course will tell you all you need to know about drawing up and monitoring the budgets and where to find the rules on the allowances.

The Working for an MP website will continue to function exactly as it has, although we shall be giving it a thorough facelift in the next few months.   The new-look W4MP will go live in January 2004.

Update 10 October 2003.
