Information about MPs

Last updated: 28 January 2003

The public parliamentary website has a list of all MPs which links to Dods online. Here's the address:  http://www.parliament.uk/commons/lib/alms.htm

Users with access to PDVN will have access to a fuller and more detailed Dods at this address:  http://hcl1.hclibrary.parliament.uk/external/online/dods_temp.htm  See below for a view of the opening page.

If you are looking for alternative free on-line information about an individual MP there are a number of websites you can try.  Some of these have minimal information only or detailed information about a limited number of MPs only.  Others are subscription only for full information.  However, one or two are both comprehensive and up-to-date.

One of the most useful is The Guardian'shttp://politics.guardian.co.uk/aristotle/  It has pretty comprehensive info about all MPs.  When you get there, click on the link you need in the following part:

How do I find out about an MP?
For information on an MP enter their name in the lower Ask Aristotle search box on the left. If you do not know their name, type a postcode or placename into the upper Ask Aristotle search box and the database will find it out for you or use one of the links below:
Labour MPs    Conservative MPs    Liberal Democrat MPs

Other searches
Other party searches    Other constituency searches

http://www.psr.keele.ac.uk/area/uk/mpsorted.htm   Richard Kimber’s Political Science Resources website – List of MPs and lots of information about election results.

The BBC's MPs Database is another excellent source.  It allows you to to search for MPs profiles by surname, region or by their cabinet job.   http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/2160988.stm
The BBC's Vote2001 website is still up and running (in late January 2002) and is a good source of basic information not only on the candidates who won (became MPs) but also on all those who stood.   There are two useful places to look:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/static/vote2001/results_constituencies/default.stm   This takes you the BBC’s Vote2001 Results & Constituencies pages.  Search for the constituency you want and then click on the MP’s name.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/static/vote2001/candidates/default.stm    This is the BBC’s Vote2001 Candidates page.  Search for the person you want by name.

http://www.epolitix.com/default.asp?body=/Sections/People/   Click on the “Display all MPs” button.  Minimal information only from ePolitix.
http://www.politicallinks.co.uk/politics/other.asp   Minimal version on the WWW. Click on “House of Commons” link for A-Z of MPs, Constituencies, Parties.  This website is published by Vacher Dod Publishing.  If you have access to the Parliamentary Intranet (PDVN) there is a full version of "Dod's" available there. Select Site Index, Letter 'D' for Dod's Parliamentary Companion.
http://www.ukpolitics.org.uk  Probably very comprehensive but you have to pay for it as the website is transferring from free to subscribers of the UKPol magazine only.

If you know of a better source, please let us know.  Use the website's Feedback Form to tell us.
