DEALING WITH SUSPICIOUS ITEMS OF MAIL

An incident yesterday with a suspect package, found to be a false alarm, has been a reminder that Members and staff should continue to be very careful about dealing with any suspicious items of mail.

Everyone is reminded to be vigilant and to take the following action:

1.      If suspicious about the contents of an envelope, DO NOT OPEN IT.  Put it down, move away and dial extension 3333, which rings in the Police Control room.

2.      If an envelope is opened and there is a substance inside, put it down, move away and dial extension 3333.   STAY IN THE ROOM and switch off any air conditioning/heating systems you may have.   Remain calm and near a telephone as the Police may wish to talk to you before entering the room.

It is important to keep any potential contamination to a minimum and Members and staff may be asked to remain in an area until the situation is resolved.

If you receive a suspect package outside the parliamentary estate, contact your local Police.  As we have advised before, you would do well, if you have not already done so, to make contact with your local Crime Prevention Officer to discuss procedures in advance.
